Rifampicin
Indications/Uses
All forms of TB, leprosy, infections caused by rifampicin-sensitive microorganisms eg, Staphylococci & Neisseria gonorrhea; asymptomatic Neisseria meningitidis carriers.
Dosage/Direction for Use
10 mg/kg (max: 600 mg/day) or 15 mg/kg (max: 900 mg) bid-tid.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Best taken 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Presence of jaundice. Severe liver damage.
Special Precautions
Liver dysfunction. Mandatory periodic liver function monitoring. May permanently discolor soft contact lenses. Do not take during the 1st 3 mth of pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions. Pruritus, rash, mouth sore & tongue, urticaria & exudative conjunctivitis. Reddish discoloration of body fluids eg, urine, saliva & lacrimal fluid.
Drug Interactions
May affect the reliability of OCs. May affect blood conc of methadone, oral hypoglycemia, digitalis derivatives, corticosteroids, & anticoagulants.
